Student Web Assistant - The Office of Communications at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS)

The CLASS Office of Communications is seeking detail-oriented Student Web Assistants to help refresh our portfolio of 22 websites that have been migrated into UH's new content management system, Modern Campus.

This is an excellent opportunity to build your portfolio with real-world websites while gaining hands-on experience with enterprise CMS platforms. Hired students will join a collaborative team of 2-3 student web assistants and receive mentorship from experienced professionals as they help maintain content quality, improve site performance, and learn industry-standard accessibility practices. While intermediate web experience is preferred, this is a beginner-friendly role as some on-the-job training will be provided.

This position is also available for work study-eligible students.

Responsibilities

  • Edit department and center websites, ensuring content and layout are accurate.

  • Ensure content meets web accessibility standards and best practices.

  • Monitor websites to fix content quality issues (e.g., broken links, out-of-date content) and ensure seamless website navigation (e.g., establish redirects, build new pages).

  • Monitor and report on site performance and escalate issues to CLASS Web Developer, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Current University of Houston student with a strong eye for detail and understanding of HTML and CSS.

  • Eligible to participate in the College Work Study program.

  • Familiarity with web development tools and frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap, Tailwind, or similar) is a plus.

  • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop or other web design tools (e.g. Canva) for image editing.

  • Familiarity with responsive design principles and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG).

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to deliver high-quality work within deadlines.

  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly.

Work Arrangements

  • Located at Agnes Arnold Hall

  • Work up to 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling to accommodate educational activities

  • This position reports directly to the Web Developer in the CLASS Office of Communications

Compensation

  • $13/hour based on qualifications and experience
