Communication Intern - University of Houston - Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies

The Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies (CMALS) at the University of Houston was established in 1972 as an interdisciplinary academic program encompassing the liberal arts, education and social sciences focusing on the Mexican American and broader Latino experience in the U.S. Its mission is to advance knowledge, promote critical thinking and foster the value of service to the community. This involves designing a broad spectrum of public and scholarly programs. Located within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, CMALS has evolved into an academic unit with several major components: teaching, research and publications, recruitment and retention, leadership training, academic advising and community service.

Job Responsibilities

  • Under supervision of the CMALS Director, CI will collaborate with the Communications Coordinator to launch communication initiatives highlighting the center's impact

  • Serve as a liaison between the students and the Center to share updates and address concerns

  • Assist in creating student relevant content to capture generation appropriate audiences on campus

  • Assist with writing and editing campus newsletters, emails, blog posts, and announcements

  • Help design simple graphics or flyers using Canva or Adobe tools

  • Take photos or short videos at campus events for social and web use

  • Support communications efforts for campus events (pre-event promotion and day-of coverage)

  • Help brainstorm ideas to increase student engagement

  • Distribute posters or promotional materials around campus

  • Organize digital content (photos, quotes, graphics) in shared folders or drives

Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace and various design tools.

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

  • Demonstrate Interest in public relations, marketing and digital media

  • Experience creating content

  • Involvement in student organizations or knowledge of campus resources

  • Ability to think creatively and develop engaging campaigns

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with diverse student populations

  • Punctual, reliable, and to work both independently and collaboratively
