The Houston Chronicle is looking for motivated student journalists who plan to pursue a career in journalism for its summer 2026 internship program.

We are seeking dynamic reporting interns to join our newsroom team. Interns will have the chance to work on our breaking news team. Our summer 2025 interns were essential contributors to our coverage, including reporting on topics like devastating floods in Kerr County and ‘Good Trouble’ protests at City Hall

Our paid internship opportunities have also propelled several former interns to full-time roles on the Chronicle’s staff, including our Harris County reporter, K-12 education reporter, higher education reporter, breaking news reporter, audience engagement producer and deputy audience director.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor local and national news sources, social media and Google Trends to identify breaking and trending stories

  • Report and write timely, accurate stories

  • Collaborate with editors, photographers and the audience team to deliver coverage that meets high standards for accuracy, speed and engagement

  • Contribute to live blogs and enterprise follow-ups as news develops

Requirements:

  • Juniors, seniors or recent graduates with prior experience at a college news publication or professional news organization.

  • Valid driver's license and access to a car.

  • Must obtain housing in Houston and work in the Chronicle’s office at least 3 days a week.

Internship Details:

  • 40 hours a week for 10 weeks, from early June and to early August. Interns will be paid $15 an hour.

  • Interns will work Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend coverage based on news demands.

  • The recruiting committee will assign all interns a mentor from the newsroom based on their interests.

Application details:

  • Please submit 3 journalistic clips, a resume, and a 1-page cover letter addressed to the recruiting committee detailing your passion for journalism and what you hope to achieve through this internship.

  • If you have any questions about the application process, please email internship recruitment committee co-chairs megan.menchaca@houstonchronicle.com and brady.stone@houstonchronicle.com.
