Marketing and Communications Student Assistant - UH Dean of Students Office

The Dean of Students is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Marketing and Communications Student Assistant to create content and marketing for the department, its services, and units. The candidate will report to the Associate Dean of Students. Additional duties may include assisting customers with event planning and scheduling room and event reservations, directing guests and visitors of campus, answering and routing incoming phone calls and questions, and completing general clerical work and other duties as assigned. Individuals must be able to work evenings, weekends and special events as needed.

Duties

  • Support all DOS marketing efforts and promotional campaigns through social media, specifically on the Cougar Family Connect Portal and Instagram.

  • Develop marketing strategies, promotional print materials, and targeted student emails

  • Maintain organization of graphic designs, event descriptions, and photographs for efficient use.

  • Draft student, department, program, alumni and employer success stories for distribution via social media, video, web, and newsletters

  • Establish relationships and collaborate with other student organizations on campus; maintain database of local contacts and partners.

  • Update various web calendar listings and DOS website information.

  • Help update and manage media assets.

  • Assist with coordinating media for various meetings & programs.

  • Represent UH DOS with a pleasant and professional demeanor through all interactions.

  • Arrive on time for work and maintain a reliable attendance record.

  • Dress appropriately for work in a casual, yet professional environment.

  • Assist the Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Students Office staff with office coverage, representation at events, event planning, in-person and virtual events and workshops, and marketing efforts.

  • Support the Dean of Students Office with major all hands-on deck type department events.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in good standing at the University of Houston.

  • Ability to take initiative.

  • Experience and interest in the field of communications, marketing, advertising, and/or student affairs.

  • Strong computer and digital proficiency with knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and design platforms (Photoshop, InDesign, Canva, etc) desired, but not required.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Photography/videography experience.

  • Attention to detail, ability to problem-solve, and critical thinking skills Candidates that demonstrate leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills will receive preference.

Pay & Work Schedule

Student will be paid $10/hour and will work approximately 15-20 hours per week. Hours will vary depending on your schedule, but the general business hours are as follows:

Monday-Friday: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Some evenings and weekend shifts may be required depending on event type.

Student must be able to start working May 2026.
