Communications Intern - Writers in the Schools

Job Description
This internship with Writers in the Schools (WITS) provides hands-on experience in design, content planning, content capture, and event support. Interns help create visual and written materials, assist with organizing and documenting workshops and events, and support community outreach initiatives. This role offers practical experience in creative programming and nonprofit operations while contributing to WITS’s mission of inspiring student creativity and fostering literacy.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Current enrollment in or recent graduation from a college/university program in English, Communications, Education, Marketing, or a related field
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Basic proficiency with design or content creation tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Interest in literacy, creative writing, or educational programming
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with social media content creation and planning
Photography or videography experience
Prior experience in nonprofit, educational, or event-support roles
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Enthusiasm for working with youth and supporting creative learning programs
Compensation
This is an unpaid internship. While there is no monetary compensation, interns gain valuable hands-on experience in design, content creation, event support, and nonprofit operations, providing meaningful educational and professional development opportunities aligned with academic and career goals. WITS follows NACE guidelines to ensure that all internship experiences are educational, well-supervised, and provide tangible learning benefits.
Hours Per Week
Approximately 10 hours, Hybrid Schedule: Primarily remote with one mandatory day in the WITS office per week. Flexible scheduling to accommodate student coursework and WITS event calendar
