Communications Fellow - Harris County Judge’s Office
Harris County is the third largest and most diverse county in the nation, with a population of more than 4.7 million, rivaling the size of the entire state of Louisiana. Judge Hidalgo functions as the chief executive of Harris County and presides over the Harris County Commissioners Court, the County's governing body. Along with four County Commissioners, the County Judge directs a budget of more than $4 billion providing essential services such as justice administration, flood control, infrastructure, and housing. Judge Hidalgo also serves as Harris County’s Director of Emergency Management.
Job Description
Communications Fellows will work directly with Judge Hidalgo’s staff and senior leaders, gaining professional and personal development experience. The Fellowship provides hands-on experience for current college students who are passionate about supporting complex public policy initiatives and compelling government communications.
Create an opportunity for current students to learn about local government and gain direct experience in government communications.
Invest in the professional development of future civic leaders and communicators.
Leverage Fellows’ written, digital and creative skills to support the communications team.
Qualifications
Experience drafting press materials, including press releases and media advisories
Experience creating content for social media platforms, including designing graphics
Some photo/video experience is preferred
Past internship experience in government, politics, or at a non-governmental organization is preferred*Strong writing and editing skills
Experience creating digital & social media content
Working knowledge of graphic design platforms, including Canva
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment
Attention to detail

Fall and Spring Communications Fellows are expected to commit up to 20 hours per week Summer Communications Fellows are expected to commit up to 40 hours per week. Deadlines:
*Fall Fellows: August 30, 2025
*Spring Fellows: December 1, 2025
* Summer Fellows: April 1, 2026
Communications Fellows must either receive course credit (COMM 4392 - Professional Internship for Credit) or have an external funding source.
Communications Fellows will contribute to high-impact initiatives while collaborating across various teams within the CJO office. To initiate the process, we request that interested candidates submit their cover letter and resume to CJO.Fellowship@harriscountytx.gov, including "Communications Fellow" in the subject line. We will then evaluate applications upon receipt and reach out to qualified candidates. As a reminder, fellows must either receive course credit or have an external funding source.
