This person assists in producing the Houston History magazine and website, published by the UH Center for Public History, by working with the editor and graduate student intern to coordinate magazine content for the Fall 2026 magazine.
The Center for Public History is collaborating with Harris Health to document the organization’s history in an issue of Houston History magazine. Formerly known as the Harris County Hospital District, Harris Health has provided critical medical services for the residents of Harris County for sixty years. Their hospitals, Lyndon B. Johnson and Ben Taub, along with over thirty clinics and health centers, provide a safety net for those in need of care.
After numerous failed votes to establish a county hospital district, that changed in 1965 after a telling book shed light on the deplorable conditions at the join city-county Jefferson Davis Hospital. Less than two months later the Harris County Hospital District formed, changing the way health care was delivered and made accessible. We will trace that history.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain public history experience and work closely with a community partner on this project.
