City of Sugar Land, TX 2026 Summer Intern

The City of Sugar Land is inviting students pursuing a college degree, graduate degree, or recent graduates (Individuals who recently completed a degree within a 6-month period from their graduation date may be considered for this program) who are interested in a temporary job as a Summer Intern to apply to join our amazing City! This is an exciting on-site position, working Monday through Friday between May 26 and July 31, 2026, during typical business hours, with occasional evening hours for events.

We pay our Summer Interns a competitive salary of $15 to $17 per hour depending on qualifications. We also offer great perks, such as lunch and learns to develop highly desirable skill sets and field trips to various City facilities to learn about different departments, including Fire-EMS, Police, Dispatch, and Surface Water Treatment Plant operations!

The ideal candidate must be pursuing a bachelor's degree, graduate degree, or is a recent graduate. Individuals who recently completed a degree within a 6-month period from their graduation date may be considered for this program.

The ideal candidate should possess an interest in government service as they will gain hands-on experience by contributing to department projects and learning municipal operations. The ideal candidate is dependable and embodies strong leadership, interpersonal skills and great team building skills. As this internship is on-site, each intern is responsible for finding their own housing and transportation to and from their workplace during this ten-week period.

Hiring Departments

The following departments are seeking interns to join their teams this summer. As a City of Sugar Land intern, you will be expected to bring a strong foundation of general skills that are essential for success in any role, along with technical skills that align with the specific department you seek to match with. Below, you'll find a list of core competencies we value in all our interns, followed by relevant degree programs and educational backgrounds applicable to various hiring departments, and technical skills and programs tailored to the unique needs of each department. These qualities will help ensure a meaningful and impactful internship experience.

General Skills

City Administration and Intergovernmental Relations (Department of Strategic and Governmental Affairs)

  • Preferred educational background in Public Administration, Communications, or Public Policy

Customer Experience

  • Preferred experience in database management, interdepartmental communication, and content structuring and organization

Employee Wellness and Engagement

  • Preferred educational background in Public Administration, Human Resources, Communications, Marketing, Event Management, Health Promotion, or a related field

  • Preferred experience Microsoft Office Suite, and basic familiarity with Canva or other design tools

Office of Data and Innovation

  • Preferred educational background in Data Analytics or Information Systems, Computer Science or Information Technology, Communications (with a technology focus), or Political Science or Urban Planning (with a data/tech interest) (for Data Division)

  • Preferred educational background in Public Administration/Public Policy, Data or Business Analytics, Industrial or Systems Engineering, Economics, Statistics, or Business (for Innovation Division)

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (for both Data and Innovation Divisions)

  • Skills in research and analysis, and information synthesis/reporting, and data concepts (for Data Division)

  • Preferred experience in graphic design (Canva or similar tools), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Machine Learning (ML) concepts (for Data Division)

  • Preferred experience with Power BI or other data visualization tools (for Innovation Division)
