Social Media Marketing Intern - UTHealth Houston Institute on Aging

Supervised by: Marketing Coordinator, Institute on Aging
Time Commitment: 5–10 hours per week (flexible with school schedule)
Position Overview
The Remote Social Media Marketing Intern will support the UTHealth Houston Institute on Aging in developing and a year of social media content to elevate the Institute’s visibility, promote events, and support key partnerships. The intern will gain hands-on experience in campaign planning, content creation, and strategic communication across multiple platforms. This internship is ideal for a marketing, communications, or public health student seeking professional experience in aging-focused content strategy, branding, and digital storytelling.
General Goals
Increase awareness of the Institute on Aging as a growing leader in aging-related research, education, and community engagement.
Promote events, programs, and milestones to audiences including students, faculty, caregivers, health professionals, and donors.
Build consistent, engaging content aligned with monthly themes and Institute priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Develop a content calendar aligned with monthly awareness topics and upcoming Institute events.
Create and propose 2–3 social media posts per week for Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube (shorts or reels).
Draft copy, design graphics, and assemble short video clips using tools such as Canva or Adobe Express.
Coordinate with Institute staff to obtain photos, quotes, and timely updates, including: - Event promotions and recaps - Stories and highlights from the Doug Pike Show (in collaboration with Jose) - Educational or awareness content aligned with aging research and advocacy
Submit all content drafts to the Marketing Coordinator for review and approval prior to publishing.
Track engagement and assist in recommending post timing and content improvements based on performance.
Supervision and Support
The intern will report directly to the Institute on Aging Marketing Coordinator.
Weekly check-in meetings will provide space for feedback, planning, and professional development.
The Marketing Coordinator will provide guidance on content alignment, branding, tone, and review all content prior to publication.
Intern will be introduced to Institute contacts as needed (e.g., Jose for Doug Pike content coordination).
Candidate Requirements
Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a major in Marketing, Communications, Branding, or Related field.
Strong writing, editing, and visual storytelling skills
Self-motivated, creative, and organized
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Canva (or similar design tools); familiarity with Instagram and LinkedIn best practices
Interest in aging, public health, or nonprofit work
